Lionesses’ Husband of the Year!
Back in 1987, the Ōtaki Lionesses hosted one of their most beloved events — Husband of the Year — bringing the community together for a night of fun, laughter, and friendly competition.
This competition and fundraiser was organised by Lioness Chrissy Anderson.
Local men put their skills to the test in a series of entertaining challenges: washing the dishes, mopping the floor, changing a baby, and even “chatting up the wife” using a mannequin! The evening concluded with a lively Q&A, keeping the audience thoroughly entertained.
The event was judged by a panel of notable local figures: Geoff Thompson (National Party), Annette King (Labour Party), Pat Georgeson, and Mayoress Barbara Scott. Brent Bythell served as MC, keeping the laughs coming all night, while the trophy was presented by 1987 Miss Horowhenua. After much spirited competition, Peter Downes was crowned the winner of the evening.
(In the 1980s, the title Mayoress was commonly used for the mayor’s wife in her community role).
This unforgettable event is a wonderful reminder of how the Lionesses combined community fun, creativity, and spirited participation, leaving memories that still bring smiles today.
