Stay Vigilant: Protect Yourself from Scammers When Booking a Stall

It’s more important than ever to be cautious of scammers posing as market organizers. Unfortunately, these individuals target vendors with fake offers, requesting payments via unofficial methods. We do our best to get rid of the scammers, and moderate comments. Scammers mostly appear on our Facebook Events.

Top Tip: Turn off commenting on your Facebook Events under the communications setting.

Always confirm details through official channels

Ensure all communication comes from the Ōtaki Market team, either via email or via the Otaki Market Facebook Messenger.

Double-check payment details

Payments should only be made via a link sent to you by the Ōtaki Market team. And if in doubt, you can give us a call on 022 616 5167 or you can opt to pay cash on the day.

Beware of urgency

Scammers often use pressure tactics, like claiming limited spots or deadlines, to rush you into paying.  We will never do this.

Report suspicious activity

If anything seems off, contact the Ōtaki Market team immediately. Your safety and trust are a priority for us. Names such as "Event by Johnson" are 100% not the Otaki Market team. We will never use our personal accounts when advertising markets; our communication is always via our official channels.

We will NEVER comment on a Facebook post about booking a stall. Below are examples of scammers.

We don't sell tickets!

As a visitor, entry to the Otaki Market is completely free, anyone claiming they have tickets is a scammer.

What to Do If You’re Targeted

If you suspect you’ve been targeted

  1. Stop Communication: Don’t engage with the scammer further.

  2. Report It: Report it to Facebook, let us know and we'll block and delete the comment

  3. Protect Your Accounts: If it comes persistent, change passwords and monitor bank statements for unusual activity.

Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics but staying informed and cautious can keep you one step ahead. Protect yourself and share these tips to help others stay safe online!
