From farm to table with 8 year old Landen

Young entrepreneurial Horowhenua local Landen (8) owner of Landen's Harvest joined us during the April school holidays to be a stall holder at Otaki Market's Kid Market. With his farm to table produce and magic harvest oil, he showcased his amazing products just like any professional stall holder.

We spent 10 minutes with Landen to find out what inspired this awesome 8 year old to start his very own business.

What made you want to start your business?

I've always wanted to have a shop, I made a little shop inside my lounge, I drew lots of pictures, and made my own trading cards, I also made a little cafe called the Greasy Grub, I sold my pictures and made snacks to sell to my family. I love animals and farming so my dad thought some chickens would be a good start for me to collect eggs and care for them.

How did you decide on the name?

Chickens once were T-rexes, so every time you eat an egg, you're eating a piece of Jurassic history! Also, Dede is my nickname, so I chose to call my eggs Dede Dino Eggs. Oh, and when I grow up, I want to be a Paleontologist.

How long have you been running your business and where are you based?

I've been running my business since Santa came to town, over the Christmas holidays my dad got me some cute chickens and build them chook houses. I'm based in Horowhenua.

What products and services does our business offer?

Dede Dino eggs & my mum helps me make Landens Harvest Everything oil, its organic with no chemicals, you can use it on everything "It makes my hair feel nice and my skin & my dad repaired a fan with the oil too."

What have you enjoyed the most about starting your own business?

I love to be out on the farm and cuddle the chickens. When I arrive, they see me coming, and they follow me around. I have a few favorites that I identify from their colorings, - Ombre has feathers that slowly go from lighter to darker, and she lets me carry her around. Pikachu always tries to peck at my toes, and I love Pokemon, so I called her Pekachu.

Luna is always outside her house late at night, maybe she's staring at the stars. My dad installed an automatic door on their chook house so they can get inside safe before any predators come out. When its dark. My chickens are happy because they get to follow the cows and they eat worms an scratch up bugs.

What have you learnt so far about being a young entrepreneur?

It takes hard work too keep up the shop but its also fun.

What do you like about going to markets?

I love exploring the markets, (when I'm not at my stall) checking out other stalls, and finding the best vintage things and teddies. I collect sheep teddies because they're the fluffiest, I have a favorite sheep called Cutie, and I take him to all the markets with me.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a business?

Do it!

How old are you? And how old where you when you started your business?

I'm eight years old and I started when i was seven.
